Growing Corn In Home Garden
growing corn in home garden

Do tomatoes, lettuce, corn, beans, onions, peas, etc. not grow in Honduras?
"Why don’t the people grow gardens? I saw on TV, a young man was deported back to Honduras, to a home where they only ate beans and corn! If beans and corn grow there, won’t other vegetables? Can’t they raise some chickens and pigs?
If it were so hard to grow vegetables in the ‘dessert’(desert) their ancestors wouldn’t have settled there. They had to have some way of surviving.
They are just too lazy to work a garden at home, they come to the USA and get a free handout.
It’s really strange that there is grass growing shoulder high in the same news report, but, vegetables won’t grow ther? Hmmm, something doesn’t jive here.

Honduras is a country located in the tropics so EVERY fruit and vegetable grows here. Most cultures especially poor ones have certain staple foods that make up most of the diet. In Honduras beans and corn are just that. Corn is very versitile though. People here eat it in tortillas, mix it with rice, make bread, corn on the cob, etc…
Most poor families in the rural areas do have chickens and other small farm animals but keep in mind these places are very isolated and poor. Most of them live on $1 a day so eating meat is a luxury and is rare. It is usually saved for special occasions such as christmas, birthdays, celebrations, among others.
